This illustration depicts the great martyrdom of the 9th Sikh Guru Sri Guru Teg Bahadur ji. In the late 1700’s Kashmiri Pandits came to Guru Teg Bahadur ji for protection from the Atrocities being done by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Guru Teg Bahadur ji said a great sacrifice is needed to protect faith and freedom. Young Gobind Rai sitting beside his father said there is no greater saint than you father. Guru Teg Bahadur ji hearing this smiled and told the kashmiri pandits to go and tell Aurangzeb if he can convert the Guru to islam you all will also convert. Guru Sahib went to Delhi and were capture by the mughal forces. Aurangzeb gave Guru Sahib two options either convert to islam or you will be killed, Guru Sahib chose the latter. Guru Sahib with his 3 beloved sikhs Bhai Mati das, Bhai Sati Das and Bhai Dyala ji attained martyrdom. Bhai Jaita ji brought Guru Sahibs head to Anandpur Sahib. After the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur ji Guru Gobind Singh ji became the 10th Guru which gave rise to a new era of Sikh History.
ਇਹ ਚਿੱਤਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਮਹਾਨ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ਦੀ ਚਿੱਤਰਕਲਾ ਹੈ। ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਕੋਲ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਧਰਮ ਅਤੇ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰਤ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠੇ ਬਾਲ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਾਇ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਹਾਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।” ਇਹ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਮੁਸਕੁਰਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰੀ ਪੰਡਿਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿ ਦਿਓ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਦਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਵੀ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਲਵੋਗੇ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਗਏ ਪਰ ਮੁਗਲ ਫੌਜਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ‘ਤੇ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ। ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਵਿਕਲਪ ਦਿੱਤੇ – ਜਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਅਪਣਾਓ ਜਾਂ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਗਲ਼ੇ ਲਗਾਓ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਵਿਕਲਪ ਚੁਣਿਆ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਤੀ ਦਾਸ, ਭਾਈ ਸਤੀ ਦਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈ ਦਯਾਲਾ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਪਰੰਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੀਸ ਵਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਭਾਈ ਜੈਤਾ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸੀਸ ਲੈਕੇ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ। ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਗੁਰਗੱਦੀ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਾਜਮਾਨ ਹੋਏ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਯੁੱਗ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਹੋਈ।
